Lodestone Patient Care | PET/CT Patients | Frequently Asked Questions | Do I need to prepare for the scan?

Unlike many other diagnostic medical procedures, PET/CT scanning needs a great amount of patient preparation.

  • Patients are required to fast for this test. Patients must refrain from eating for at least 6 hours prior to the test. There are no exceptions. We advise that patients drink water only for this period prior to the examination.
  • Patients may require bowel preparation before their examination. This will vary depending on the type of examination. All patients requiring bowel preparation will be informed well in advance.
  • Diabetic patients should contact the department well in advance of their examination.
  • Patients may require a mild form of sedation for their PET/CT scan. Please arrange a carer or visitor to escort you to the PET/CT centre on the day of your examination. You will not be allowed to drive home after a sedative is given.

It is important that you read the instructions sent to you with your appointment literature.
