Lodestone Patient Care | MRI Patients | Frequently Asked Questions | How long does an MRI scan take?

For one part of your body to be scanned it generally takes about 30 minutes. However, it will usually take longer to scan more than one part of your body.

The length of scan may also vary depending upon the diagnosis being sought, for example, it often takes longer to produce high resolution images when very small anatomical structures are being scanned.
We tailor the scan to the individual patient. This means that your scan may take a different amount of time than a scan you may have been told about by a friend or relation. Please don't worry about this, different scanners also take different times to obtain the same images!

Remember too that the scanner may take literally hundreds of pictures (an advantage of not using ionising radiation) and all the images need to be checked for technical quality before you are taken off the scan table.

The important thing to remember is that just because a scan takes longer, does not mean there is something wrong with you.
