Information for patients attending West Middlesex MRI
for a DEXA (bone mineral density) scan

Bone densitometry is a very simple examination which involves lying on a special bed whilst the arm of the scanner passes over you. The bone densitometer measures your bone mineral density (BMD). It will compare your measurements to a reference population based on your age, weight, gender and ethnic background. This information will be used by your doctor to determine your bone status and fracture risk.

  • Preparation: Unless instructed otherwise please eat and drink normally on the day of your examination and continue to take any medication. We suggest you wear comfortable clothing without metallic zips and buttons. Alternatively, we can provide you with a gown to change into. If you wear a bra you will be asked to remove it.
  • How long does it take? Spine or hip measurements take approximately 5 minutes. Please allow about 30 minutes from the time you arrive in the department to the time that you leave.
  • Does it hurt? No, and there are no injections.
  • Is it safe? Bone densitometry involves an extremely small dose of radiation - a bone density scan of your lumbar spine delivers a much smaller dose that a chest x-ray.
  • Where do I get the results? The results will be sent to the doctor who referred you. If you are a private patient who self-referred, the results will be sent to your GP.
